Outside of very basic trading, you mostly just build up your city (in mostly the same way, some varying based on climate/season) and then maybe kill your enemies. Deeper political and economic systems (e.g. Larger maps or a '4X esque' persistent campaign map. What would of improved the game for me is a few things, but summed up as more 'hardcore depth'. About the only reason I play is because I haven't played in a few weeks and I feel like trying out a new climate (think snow, forest, desert with a few sub-groups there within). I don't particular care for the combat it's not bad but it's not something that really inspires me to put the game CD in to play either. That said, once you've built a complete city, there's not much left to do. When I do play the game, I'm usually glued to the screen for 2-4 hours. It's a beautiful game with great NPC animation and detail, and cool effects like seasonal changes. What I love is that exact village management.
